Crappie Fishing: A Comprehensive Guide

“This is the fish of simple pleasures: kids with Snoopy rods and Zebco push buttons, family vacations and fish fries, old guys sitting on 5-gallon buckets with a dozen minnows, a handful of bobbers, a thermos of coffee, and stories to tell…”

How To Rig and Fish the Ned Rig

“The Ned rig doesn’t pass the eyeball test. If that simple plastic stub looks like anything, it’s a half-cigar or small turd. I was more than skeptical the first time I saw one. But turd-fishing can catch a crapload of fish, especially heavily pressured bass.”

Best Camp Grills & Stoves

Eating is one of our favorite parts about camping. After a long day of hiking, biking, or simply breathing the mountain air, we crave a good hot meal. That calls for the best camp kitchen we can muster for our roadside recipes or a pop-up, backcountry bistro. Our Gearhead® Experts have worked their culinary magic at countless campsites, so we tapped into the expertise of our top tailgate and trailhead chefs to find the best camp grills and stoves for car camping, backpacking, and overlanding.

“Jory works hard so he can play hard—proven by his high output within our team and top 10 finishes in Backcountry’s Summer Adventure Contest. He consistently outperformed his teammates in quantity of writing produced and often took on additional writing projects for the marketing copywriting team… His creative prowess comes from an obvious passion for his outdoor pursuits and for expanding his knowledge. Best Fly Fishing Packs

The best fly fishing packs have come a long way from the old cloth vest that grandpa used to wear under the wicker creel he slung over his shoulder. Today’s fly fishing vests are lighter and more water resistant than their predecessors. Plus, today’s anglers can choose from a slew of chest packs, hip packs, sling packs, and backpacks designed specifically for fishing.

The only downside to these advancements is that it’s gotten tougher to choose the smartest set up to carry our favorite flies and gizmos. That’s why we created this post. Our Gearhead® Experts have compiled some tips on choosing a fly fishing pack and curated a list of our favorite fly fishing vests, chest packs, hip packs, sling packs, and backpacks on the market today.

“Whenever our marketing team needed help writing, we turned to Jory. His expertise in everything outdoors is only eclipsed by his exceptional writing skills. Jory brings a fresh and unique perspective to whatever he writes about, whether it’s grills, boats, clothes, or gear—he can cover it all.”

Research Digest: Public Lands

“Most people access nature through public lands — from small urban greenspaces to large national parks, forests and rivers. Thus, the value of public lands is more than economic. On top of generating revenue and jobs, public lands also support outdoor recreation and relaxation, preserve wildlife habitat, serve as sites of learning and research, connect friends and family and provide mental and physical health benefits.

In the words of Dr. Howard Frumkin, leading epidemiologist and member of the Children & Nature Network’s Founders’ Council:

If we had a medicine that delivered as many benefits as parks, we would all be taking it. Parks deliver cardiovascular benefits, fight loneliness, combat osteoporosis, counter stress, anxiety, and more. And they do those things without adverse side effects and at minimal costs.

Research Digest: Backcountry & Wilderness Adventures

Wilderness areas are the most natural environments that children, adolescents, young adults, and families can experience. This Research Digest explores the wide-ranging benefits of backcountry and wilderness adventures, such as remote climbing, paddling, skiing, surfing and backpacking trips. We curated a range of recent studies to cover the continuum of outdoor adventures where youth and young adults intentionally engage risk in more remote environments — from formal outdoor education and wilderness therapy programs to slow adventures, adventure tourism, and high-risk nature sports . . .

Best Backpacking Chairs of 2025

At the end of an epic day of backpacking, we’d rather sink into a comfortable chair than sit on a rock, log, or the bare ground. The trouble is, many backpacking chairs aren’t that comfortable – and aren’t worth the extra pack weight. That’s why the CleverHiker team has researched and tested more than 30 backpacking chairs from brands like Helinox, REI, NEMO, and more . . .

Oboz Sawtooth X Review

The Oboz Sawtooth and I go way back. The original Sawtooth saw me through some of my favorite Australian bushwalks, including the Great Ocean Walk. The Sawtooth IIs are still going strong as my trail-to-town shoe. So I was stoked to snag the new Sawtooth X and test it out in Pennsylvania—the place, in Bill Bryson’s words, “where hiking boots go to die.”

LOWA Fortux Review

Serious hikers know that LOWA is one of the best brands for burly hiking boots. In 2023, however, the brand broke that mold by launching its first trail running shoes. Of the new shoes in its All Terrain Running line, the LOWA Fortux is the best trail running shoe for hikers. Like Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider, the Fortux is an anatomical wonder—super light yet stacked at the same time. My LOWA Fortux review offers a hiker’s perspective on this brand new trail runner . . .

La Sportiva Prodigio Max Review for Hikers

The new La Sportiva Prodigio Max is made for ultra-distance runners—not hikers. But it’s often the case that ultramarathon shoes make solid hiking shoes, too. After all, if a shoe is designed to hold up for a 50K, 100K, or 100 mile race, it should hold up for a 5, 10, or 15 mile hike!  Plus, this shoe has a similar profile to the HOKA Speedgoat—a Hiking Feet favorite. So I was more than a little stoked to get my hands on the Prodigio Max and test it out on a series of hikes in New Mexico’s Sandia, Jemez, and Sangre de Cristo mountains. My La Sportiva Prodigio Max review gives you a hiker’s perspective on this new, max cushion trail running shoe that some people are calling La Sportiva’s “Speedgoat killer.”

Sample Product Descriptions

As a copywriter at Backcountry, I created approximately 5,000 product description pages in the following categories: hike/camp, paddling, fly fishing, footwear, outerwear, run, outdoor lifestyle, snow soft goods, and travel. Backcountry.com will continue to update its PDPs with product updates and new brand voice requirements (which are more creative and less constraining than the specifications I worked under from 2022 to 2024), so eventually expect the links below to become outdated. But here are some sample product descriptions from my time as a full-time remote copywriter at Backcountry:

Western Mountaineering Kodiak GTX Infinium Bag

Made for those of us who are more bear-shaped or Sasquatch-sized, the Kodiak GORE-TEX INFINIUM Down Sleeping Bag is Western Mountaineering’s extra-large mummy bag for winter hiking, camping, and mountaineering. With extra width from the shoulders down to the feet—and enough length to accommodate 7-footers—the Kodiac is crammed with premium, 850+ fill power goose down, giving it exceptional loft and packability for winter escapes into the wilderness. This bag also features GORE-TEX INFINIUM, the most water-resistant and breathable fabric appropriate for sleeping bags, to protect us against extreme weather. This bruin will keep us warm down to a brutish zero degrees, even though it only weighs a touch more than 3 pounds.

Outdoor Research Helium Rain Jacket

The Outdoor Research Helium Rain Jacket is the lightweight shell that’s worked thru-hikers and gram-counters into a tizzy. Weighing only six ounces, the Helium rides light and takes up little real estate in our pack until we need it to ride out a surprise shower or bundle up on gusty summit. The Helium’s Pertex Shield Diamond Fuse shell is surprisingly tough for its weight, windproof yet highly breathable, and waterproof in light to moderate precipitation. This is a stellar emergency shell and a top pick for hikers, backpackers, runners, and climbers who prioritize weight savings and packability over everything else in a rain shell.

Garmin Fenix 7S Pro Sapphire

The pinnacle of the Fenix line, the Fenix 7S Pro Sapphire Solar Sport Watch boasts all of Garmin’s premium technologies. It starts with the Power Sapphire Lens, which is nearly as hard as a diamond and also converts direct sunlight into battery power for days—even weeks—of juice, depending on our watch mode. As for modes, the Fenix 7S packs all the navigation, activity tracking, health monitoring, and smartwatch features we could need, plus over 30 sport apps and advanced training metrics and recovery insights to help us maximize our training and enjoy our runs, climbs, hikes, ski tours, XC routes, enduro races, road miles, surfing weekends, and golf rounds. It’s the premium adventure watch and multi-sport partner for our favorite outdoor pursuits.

Riversmith Euro River Quiver 4-Banger

Standard fly rod roof racks are not long enough for many European-style Nymphing rods, which is why Riversmith built the Euro River Quiver 4-Banger. The Euro River Quiver holds four, fully-rigged fly rod combos up to 11-foot 4-inches—which fits both standard fly rods and “tight lines” anglers’ longer rods. That lets us Euro Nymphers spend less time in the parking lot rigging up and breaking down our rods and reels—and more time on the water fishing. We can trust Riversmith’s durable aluminum tubing, padded reel box, and polypropylene liner to protect our rods in transit, and the reel box has a tongue and groove pattern that protects against pry tools and locks to secure our rigs when we swing by the fly shop or stop at the convenience store for a 6-pack to share with our fishing buddies as we swap fishing stories. Compatible with almost any commercial cross bars, the River Quiver lets us haul our friends’ or kids’ rods along with us—or take our full quiver of rods with us on the road.

Jackson Kayaks Knarr FD Fishing Kayak

Built for big water, big fish, and big tournaments, the Jackson Kayak Knarr FD Kayak boasts a gnarly set of features for serious anglers. That starts with the Flex Drive Mark IV pedal drive—which is faster, quieter, and more durable than earlier pedal drives—and a hull design that can handle big waves and accommodate either a bow-mounted or stern-mounted trolling motor. The Knarr also features Jackson Kayak’s adjustable seating system, which lets us switch between high and low seating positions with one-hand, and traction pads for safer stand up fishing. For those of us with a full quiver of rods, the Knarr features three rod tubes on both sides of the boat, two flush-mount rod holders, and a YakAttack Omega Rod Holder that we can position wherever we want using the 12 feet of Tri-Trak, which wraps around much of the kayak to mount accessories and conceal cables for custom outfitting. The Knarr also lets us store our battery in front of the pedal drive or in the large rear hatch, so we can balance our weight and configure our toys and tech however we want.

NRS Approach 120 Raft

The perfect size for two anglers and gear, the NRS Approach 120 Fishing Raft lets us run rivers, deftly deliver dry flies to surfacing fish, and spray river banks with streamers. This raft is built for fishing stealth with smaller tubes, and its ultralight design also fits in standard truck beds and SUVs. It’s engineered for river safety with rugged PVC construction, welded seams, multiple air chambers, a 6-inch drop-stitch floor, and a 4000-denier bottom wear patch. We don’t need a casting platform, thanks to the slip-resistant foam pad on the floor and the molded thigh hook, which helps stabilize the front angler. The rear seat gives the rower easy access to the internal anchor system, which keeps the anchor line away from our feet and gear.

The Approach 120 Raft Package includes two padded seats, adjustable oar mounts, bow and stern dry box storage and storage trays, bow angler molded thigh hook, internal anchor system, anchor lock – PXR cam cleat, 40ft anchor line, motor mount, dual rod holder, four tie-down straps, and a pump—in addition to the 12-foot Approach raft.
